I was at a point where I needed help with a resume, to get to the next level in a career in Web Design. I kept my search at first confined to Google – but, unhappy with the results, went to Craigslist to find someone to help me out writing a stellar resume. Every site I visited, I had the same thought – the sites were outdated and unattractive. Why would I trust this company to market me to employers, when they can’t even market themselves effectively? In looking at the resumes they wrote, so much emphasis was placed on writing that it seemed like design wasn’t a priority at all.
Most of the resume writers I talk to have an aversion to the idea of ‘designing’ a resume -Â applying a professional touch to the look and layout of a resume. Much of what passes for ‘design’ in the world of resumes seems to be Microsoft Word templates and clip art. This state of affairs seems a little absurd. Corporations spend billions every single year on advertising and marketing teams. Pepsi spent hundreds of millions on its latest redesign of its logo.
Design is such a part of our lives that most people don’t even remark its presence – and yet its absence is sorely felt. For most resume writers, ‘design’ is using an outlandish color of paper, a goofy font and clip art. What I feel like resumes need are a professional (hence the name) graphic designer to arrange information into a hierarchy, to emphasize the most important information, and give the applicant instant credibility by establishing them as a professional, serious job applicant. Great design, coupled with strong, clear writing means the resume becomes a powerful marketing document, and visually stands out in a job market where most jobs paying more than 30k/year get anywhere from 200-400 resumes.
This highly competitive marketplace demands that applicants give themselves as much momentum and advantage going into the interview as possible. I felt that current resume services were not offering this kind of professional touch. I feel good about being to offer someone a head start towards getting a job they desire. It’s a unique service, and I have no doubt that my clients will be satisfied with the work I do, and that they will see the results in an increased number interviews for positions applied for.
