A mid-level engineer’s resume will highlight work experience, with a short skills section near the top of the resume (after the summary). Engineers need to focus on their core competencies, along with statistics that backs up claims of having done well for a company.
Short summary of qualifications
Even at the mid-level, your work experience should start to speak for itself. Keep the list of skills to 5-8 bullet points, and continue on to the ‘work’ section. Remember the SAR model of writing resumes, even for a short section like skills.
Longer ‘work’ section
A mid-level engineer’s resume is going to be most heavy on the work experience, unless they are changing industries – that’s a whole other ballgame! For an engineer looking to advance in their own field, they need a solid work history, with few gaps in time, written in the never-fail SAR model of resume writing: Situation (what was it?), Action (what did you do?) and Result (what was the positive benefit to the company?) Make sure the positive benefit is measurable – always back it up with numbers if at all possible.
Language
If you are having problems with the language in the ‘work’ section, check out this list of resume verbs I have compiled (it’s a work in progress). Remember the verb always starts the sentence (NOT “I drafted and built…” but rather “Drafted and built….”)
